Our Future, Our Responsibility  -  Aim High

Welcome to 2014.
Our theme for this year will take us on a journey of:
  • What Nelson has to offer
  • Where are we going
  • What it means to act responsibly with our resources
  • Exploring ideas of sustainability
  • How we can do many things even better.
In Term 1 we will be busy using the Human Rights declaration to build a strong community within the class - 'Kotahitanga'.  Where we all have a voice and work together in a supportive environment.

The last weeks of Term 4

Hi there,
we had some really cool things happening in the last couple of weeks! We had our Big Day Out (Laser Tag & Hydro Slide), we had Shared Morning Tea for Shanna and fun times in the pool with our buddies. We also had a Sleepover at School where some of us got a little bit wet and we made it to the top of Mt Arthur this year!
We also said farewell to our Year 6 leavers who will be challenged at NIS/Prep next year.

Thanks to all Parent Helpers!!

From Shanna:

I had a really wonderful time in Room 4! I've been here for two terms and had so much fun with all of you guys! You're an awesome lot and I wish all the leavers a wonderful time at IntermediatePrep. And Year 5, you are the lucky ones who can stay in Sue's class, have fun and be good role models (as you are now already).
I'll miss you all and you're always welcome in Germany :)

Hi and welcome to Term 3. Room 4 would also like to welcome Shanna to our class. She is a German exchange/intern and will be helping both our room and Whaea Carly's room. We look forward to sharing our class with Shanna. Our focus for this term is to discover information about our solar system, where we are within the solar system and our relationships within the solar system. The syndicate teachers have been busy introducing the three lines of inquiry and setting the scene with rich vocabulary. We are discovering how the tide works, the influence of the seasons, why the moon shines and one group is considering making a model of the solar system to scale! Some of us are looking at how the moon has influenced myths and legend - or cultural practices. From weeks five onward we are going on an adventurous journey through New Zealand and beyond. We will be selecting a famous adventurer and researching. We will then use this information to re create the adventure through a variety of genres like poetry, information reports, debates, advertising etc. Planning, thinking skills and surface features (sentence structure, use of language) will be a focus throughout. Highlights for the term will be our ski trip, visits to and from Nelson Intermediate School, Tree planting, Totara Trading, Rock da House and a Suter visit. Milo Mondays will continue until the end of the term, like wise for the baking sessions every Friday.

Using Science to Understand Our World

Term 2 Welcome to Term 2 and welcome to Sara Burrows our Year 1 student. She has been very busy taking the students through the fair testing process for our 'in school' science fair at the end of this term. As it is winter Milo Mondays are back on offer. Children are enjoying this start to the week. We had a successful camp in Term 1 and are now focusing our energies on Cross Country, Character Portraits, Visual Mihi and for PE - throwing and catching. Our class is hoping to hold a netball tournament at the beginning of Term 3 - so netball skills will also be on the agenda. We also have cooking groups every Friday and have enjoyed some very scrumptious food. We have a busy year of science. Not only will we be participating in the science fair, but as a class we will be exploring the many aspects of science. We will start off in Term One with the living world. Checking out some wonderful ideas on evolution, classifications, adaptations and ecology. The class had an interesting visit to our locall stream - where Mel introduced us to a variety of stream critters. Chck out our inquiry learning page for more information on what the chidren are doing.

Enterprising Education

An Enterprising Education is our theme for 2012.  During Term one we have explored the many enterprising attributes (qualitieis) that help us to be enterprising students. Attributes like being able to negotiate, recognising opportunites, being prepared to take calculated risks, having tenacity to persever, being creative, generating ideas, being resourceful, flexible etc.  We explored and matched these qualities by observing 'Horton' in Horton Hears a Who'.
We then used and recognised these qualities while doing a science theme of 'Water Water everywhere'.  Check our Inquiry learning for more on this.
Term's 2,3,4  will have us revisiting these qualities at the beginning of each unit and then using these qualities to help us with our group research work.  First we will be exploring electricity, Term 3 involves a sports technology unit, and by term 4 we will be looking at 'Making a difference for all'.

Our Class

Kia Ora, we are a class of Year 5 and Year 6 students. Take your time and look through our work on our blog as this is one of the many ways we will communicate our learning processes, understandings, experiences and outcomes to parents, whanau, friends and the wider community. Browse through our links - which include our class contract, homework, and a time line of dates. Please feel free to leave comments on what we are doing in Room 4 - we love to hear from you all.
